Vijay Kapur
Vijay Kapur has had a career that has spanned 35 years with a wide exposure to a great many interests and things. While still in the School of Architecture, New Delhi, he opened an interiors work-shop and executed 3 projects in Asia '72, at the new exhibition grounds at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. From then on, he worked in many Trade Fairs over the next 10 years, executing exhibition stall and pavilions for companies like Escorts Ltd., TVS, Dunlop, Phillips, Coir Board, etc. The workshop became a full-fledged mechanized factory, and for the next 15 years, the factory turned out commercial, retail and residential interiors that were characterized by flare and panache. A love for wood developed very early in life, and so to did a line of wooden table ware, that was a huge success, that sold at CAC, Bombay and Ahmedabad, The Shoppe and Giggles in New Delhi, Khazana at the Taj Hotels, among other interior boutiques. A line of wooden Venetian blinds was also developed, An interest in steel led Vijay to explore steel as a medium for furniture, and that interest saw a line of avant-garde furniture developed to be sold at I'm, the Gallery of Applied Arts in New Delhi. Many successful exhibitions were held here, to great critical acclaim. He has also worked with the Building Centre, New Delhi, promoted by Hudco, building geodesic domes and space frames for use as low-cost housing.
Today, Vijay Kapur Designs takes on projects that cover a wide spectrum, that offer scope for creativity and new ideas and materials, and for clients who are not afraid to cross boundaries, just like we are not.
